One of the most popular features we ran this past year
was a
set of stills from "Disneyland U.S.A." a 1956 Disney CinemaScope featurette.
We followed it up with a Part Two,
and we promised more as time permitted. For this third set of
stills we've changed the game plan a bit; with material selected
from another program about the park in order to celebrate the
holidays. Again we'll keep the commentary short, and let the
photos speak for themselves.
"Disneyland Around the Seasons" was originally broadcast on
December 18, 1966, three days after Walt Disney's death.
In the show he discusses the opening of small world and New
Orleans Square, features two upcoming attractions (Pirates and
Lincoln), then closes with an extended look at the Christmas Fantasy
on Parade and Candlelight Procession. In today's piece we'll keep
our focus on the holiday aspect of the show.
Disneyland's parades have evolved quite a bit since 1966, and
visitors accustomed to the park's current state-of-the-art
processions may find this episode to be an eye-opening look back at
how relatively simple and unsophisticated they used to be.
Before we start though I wanted to point out the giant star that
used to top the Matterhorn, as it pops up here and there in the
background throughout the footage.
The Christmas decor is up on Main Street...
...as the trumpeters lead the Christmas Fantasy on Parade by the
giant white-flocked tree in Town Square.
We make a big jump here to the parade's Christmas finale; you'll
