Hello Dear Readers! Cupcakes, drive-ins, and Neil Gaiman - that's what we're going to talk about this week, two things for all of you in the LA area, one for the New Yorkers. So … let's get to it!

I've seen Erin McKenna on Martha Stewart extolling the virtues of her Vegan, gluten-free, soy-free, dairy-free, egg-free, agave-sweetened, Kosher bakery named BabyCakes NYC, and I've been intrigued enough to purchase her cook book of the same name.

The idea of fantastic tasting sweets made without the usual ingredients is enough to place the BabyCakes NYC bakery on the list of places I'd like to check out next time I go to New York. Luckily though, I no longer have to wait for the next big apple trip to try out a BabyCakes cupcake because BabyCakes is now in LA.

Maybe you'd like to check BabyCakes NYC out too. Located at 130 East 6th Street, Los Angeles (between S. Main Street & S. Los Angeles St), they are closed Mondays, hours for the rest of the week are:

  • Tues-Sat 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM
  • Sunday 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM

For more information: (213) 623-5555 http://www.babycakesnyc.com/locations.html

Now … you've got your carload of BabyCakes goodies, right? What you need next is a movie. Get your most comfy jammies on and head on out to the drive-in.

Remember drive-ins? There aren't too many around any more, but there is one coming up this Saturday you can go to and it sounds pretty cool.

Devil's Night Drive-in takes place Saturday, January 16th on a rooftop parking lot in downtown LA. The cost is $10/person and Donnie Darko is the film. The screening starts at 6:00 PM at 240 W. 4th Street, LA, CA 90013. For more information: http://www.devilsnight.com/drivein.htm

Our last item for today is a freebie in New York. Great music, Neil Gaiman, & free, what more could you ask for?

This Saturday, lower Manhattan's Knickerbocker Chamber Orchestra will perform Sergei Prokofiev's children's classic, Peter and the Wolf with special guest narrator (and the author of one of my favorite books, Coraline), Neil Gaiman.

The concert begins at 7:00 PM on January 16th, at the World Financial Center: Winter Garden, 220 Vesey Street, New York, NY 10281. It's free, no tickets are necessary, and all seats are first-come, first served! For more information: http://www.knickerbocker-orchestra.org/

One more thing before I say goodbye:

In last week's Pressing Matters I mentioned that I was excited about a pair of limited edition Mickey Mouse ears included in the new 55th Happiest Memories on Earth Merchandise line that's now popping up in Disneyland's stores. I got emails asking me what the ears look like. So, Dear Readers, I have a little more information about the Mickey Ears, what they'll cost, a photo and when you can expect their arrival at Disneyland. Here are the details:

The limited-edition mouse ears replicate the shape, logo and fabrication of the original Mickey Mouse Club ear hat that was featured on the TV show in 1955. This commemorative ear hat is limited to a quantity of 1,955 and features a special label inside the hat, a special hangtag, and it comes packaged in a collectible vintage hat box with foil highlights and velvet lining.

The price for the limited edition Mickey ears will be $49.95. Look for the ears to show up only in Disneyland in May 2010 (and as they always say at Disneyland – this information is subject to change).

And that should do it for this week's...

Due to our already extensive email loads we won't be able to acknowledge each submission, but those under consideration may get a note from us asking for more details. Representatives from the items chosen are invited to answer questions from readers at the forum linked at the end of each column.
