Not into sports (I know, I’m not very sporty myself), well how about some artsy stuff? I don’t know about you, but I’m all a dither in anticipation over the Tim Burton exhibit scheduled to open May 29th at the Los Angeles County Art Museum.

May 29th can’t come soon enough, but to help bide the time till then there’s another Burtonesque exhibit a little closer on the horizon. On April 16th, Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra opens a show dedicated to the 20th anniversary of Burton’s film, Edward Scissorhands:

In collaboration with Sebastien Mesnard, Gallery Nucleus will be showcasing a selection of original works from the Scissorhands 20th blog. The exhibit will highlight the works of over 40 artists, including paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, etc. and unite enthusiasts and fans in celebrating the 20th anniversary of Tim Burton's classic love story and its unforgettable characters; Edward, Kim, Peg and a band of colorful suburbanites. Opening Reception highlights include:

• Live music.
• Free refreshments and ambrosia served.
• Raffle prizes/gifts for those dressed in their best Scissorhands-inspired attire.
• Gifts and samples provided by "Avon Lady" (Johanna Figueroa).

The Edward Scissorhands 20th Anniversary Tribute takes place at Gallery Nucleus starting on April 16th and runs through May 9th. Opening night reception on April 16th is from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM and is a free, all-ages event. The gallery is located at 210 East Main Street, in Alhambra, CA.

Now let’s switch gears a bit and talk about Harry Potter. A friend went to see Harry Potter: The Exhibition when it was in Seattle and LOVED it, couldn’t stop talking about how fantastic it was and she made me positively green with envy. I really wanted to go see all the things she talked about. Well, the very same exhibition is moving to New York in April so now ... all you New Yorker Potter fans, you can go see it too. Make your plans and buy your tickets, I think you probably aren’t going to want to miss this one:

In this amazing exhibition, guests will get an up close and personal look at the artistry and craftsmanship that went into creating the iconic props and costumes that appeared throughout the Harry Potter films. These authentic artifacts will be displayed in elaborate settings inspired by locations from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry including the Gryffindor common room, Hagrid’s hut and the Great Hall.

Harry Potter: The Exhibition will be at Discovery Times Square in New York, NY from April 5, 2011 to Sept 5, 2011. For more information visit this link.

Our last item today is another exhibit for New Yorkers and boy, oh boy, do I wish I could go see it:

The Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators is proud to present “R. Crumb: Lines Drawn On Paper,” a diverse exhibition of work spanning the past four decades by the inimitable R. Crumb. This 90-piece exhibit showcases rare and seminal examples of original art including covers and interior pages from ZAP, San Francisco Comic Book, Head Comix, Bijou Funnies, The East Village Other, Snatch Comics, Motor City Comics, Your Hytone Comix, Big Ass Comics, The People’s Comics, Despair, Black & White Comics, Arcade, Hup and Weirdo. This exhibit features such counter-culture icons as Fritz the Cat, Mr. Natural, Shuman the Human, Bo Bo Bolinski, Lenore Goldberg and Her Girl Commandos, Horny Harriet Hotpants, Boingy Baxter, Angelfood McSpade and a special guest appearance by the ol’ pooperoo himself—R. Crumb.

R. Crumb: Lines Drawn on Paper runs from March 23, 2011 to April 30, 2011 at the Society of Illustrators on 128 East 63rd Street in New York, NY. For more information visit this link.
